As a native Clevelander and lifelong (i.e. 47 years) Northeast Ohio resident, I have heard my fair share of “Mistake on the Lake (Erie)” jokes. Yes, it’s true the Cuyahoga River caught fire in 1969, the city has suffered from loss of jobs due to de-industrialization, there have been numerous failed redevelopment efforts, and as far as sports teams go; well, I have yet to see a championship winning team. Jokes aside, I don’t think anyone can argue that the Northeast Ohio region has evolved into a world class leader in medical treatment, education and innovation in the health care industry.

The Cleveland Clinic is currently regarded as one of the top 4 hospitals in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report. The Cleveland Clinic ranks number one in America for cardiac care and top in the areas of gastroenterology, neurology, orthopedics, and urology. Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital is one of the country's best for pediatric and neonatal intensive care. University Hospitals of Cleveland is a renowned center for cancer research and treatment; as well as Metro Health Medical Center.

The Northeast Ohio region is also noted in the field of biotechnology research, led by Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, and University Hospitals of Cleveland. Cleveland is among the top recipients of investment for biotech research and start-ups. The Cleveland Clinic created CCF Innovations as an incubator to commercialize Clinic research and create successful startup companies. In addition, the Cleveland Clinic received a State of Ohio innovation award which resulted in the Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center. This center was funded as part of the state’s Third Frontier program to generate economic growth for the region leveraging the Clinic’s expertise in heart disease. Several other area organizations, such as JumpStart Inc., are investing venture capital in early stage companies, while others, such as BioEnterprise, focus on attracting venture capital and other funding into bioscience and technology firms.

What about the Cleveland Medical Mart and Convention Center? Scheduled to open in July of 2013, the Medical Mart is designed to bring buyers and sellers of medical supplies and equipment together in a comprehensive marketplace. The facility includes showrooms for major manufacturers and service providers, conference spaces and exhibition space. One look at the construction video and it’s hard not to get excited. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBwN8Miwks0&feature=player_detailpage

Mistake, I think not! Cleveland has become a vibrant healthcare industry hub with world class research, clinical facilities, and medical device, biopharmaceutical, and Health IT companies. The biomedical industry has grown from 300 companies in 2002 to over 700 companies in 2011. An ever-growing pipeline of funded startup companies demonstrates the vibrant biomedical environment in the region. While uncertainty always exists (i.e. Fiscal Cliff, Affordable Health Act, FDA regulatory hurdles) it is apparent the vision of the region is to be recognized as the Medical Capital of the world. A clear and compelling vision can drive extraordinary business results. When it comes to health care, medical research and innovative biotech companies, it’s no mistake that Northeast Ohio is a leader.
